I’ve never seen a roof top tent in the wild. Kinda neat, but definitely square. I wonder how much wind noise it generates.

Seeing these things makes me wish I was still single. Makes me want to live out of my car for a few months.

Silly Matrix with its red badge. It thinks it's a Type R.

Everyone is getting in on the sweet Ov erlander coin.. not all rtt are created equal though. I would stick to the cvt or tepui originals.

I’ve seen those - just what is the advantage of sleeping up there as opposed to on the ground? (Staying away from animals?) Wouldn’t there be a fairly low weight limit if it’s just  supported by the rack rails?

Increased vehicle drag is offset by less weight in your wallet, IIRC they start at $1,500.

I did it in a Westfalia Syncro vam with a Subaru H6 in it...you won’t regret it. Camping at wal mart parking lots is allowed and free if you didn’t know.

I imagine that the benefits are more than just being off the ground. You get something that is ( supposedly) fast to set up, provides a shade canopy, keeps you off the ground and makes to look super legit.

a lot.  Also there is a game I play in utah called 20 minute tent.  its where you drive around in Utah and if you can go 20 minutes without seeing a RTT...you win.  So far, no winners.

From what I’ve read, w eight can be an issue, but that’s why a key ingredient to a roof top tent setup is a really good rack. Keep in mind that I don’t own one, so I’m going off of testimonials like this one . The first one I ever saw was a video of one on an award-winning off-road trailer in Australia. It seemed like a great idea. Setup is a matter of removing the cover, folding out the tent and putting the ladder in place. Much faster than setting up a ground tent. It also puts you up high, away from most animals and ground-crawling bugs. You also always have a flat surface to sleep on. As long as you park in a level spot, your tent will be level too. Having the tent mounted on top frees up a little space in your vehicle, or a lot of space if you use your vehicle for sleeping instead of using a ground tent.

The biggest downside is that you can’t use your vehicle for exploring without taking your tent along for the ride. You can get around that by mounting it on a trailer.

Seems like a neat solution to me.

I thought it might generate a lot of noise. Does anyone make a more aerodynamic shell for one?

nope, but you can get shell style ones. I would love to buy an autohome one...but they are many monies.
